The LCC incorporated in the State of Wisconsin in 1998 and opened its doors in 1999. During the first 16 months of operation LCC enrolled over 2,000 youth and their families. Since its inception, the LCC has grown tremendously through programming, staff and location. Since January of 2002, under the leadership of a new Executive Director, the operating budget has dramatically increased from $200,000 to $1.2 million. Programs have increased from one after school program to 9 fully developed and funded programs as well as an increase in staff from 4 to 60.
The LCC serves one of the most diverse and impoverished communities on the near Southside of Milwaukee, including the 53204 and 53215 zip codes. LCC is located within the Neighborhood Service Planning (NSP) Area 16 of the Community Block Grant Dollar (CDBG) allocation sites. This community of 24,323 has the highest population density per capita in the city. Youth ages 0-17 make up 32.7% (7,966) of the population. It is also one of the most ethnically and racially diverse neighborhoods.
The Latino Community Center offers programming in the following areas: after school academic enrichment, gang and violence diversion, recreation, technology training, environmental education, youth development, prevention programming, street outreach, healthy girls, and adult enrichment programs. The strength of LCC lies in a strong grassroots community approach. The majority of the staff and volunteers were raised and continue to live in the neighborhood that we serve. The agency is made up of highly competent bicultural/bilingual staff, which is highly committed to the organization and the community.
